About the Area

The fine historic city of Lancaster boasts Roman remains, the finest castle in the north of England and a proud architectural heritage with Georgian and Victorian gems spread throughout the city. Visitors can follow the trail of the Pendle witches and Lancaster martyrs in tours of the historic castle or enjoy the tranquillity of the ancient Priory church. Looking down on the city is the beautiful Ashton Memorial set in manicured parkland, home to the Edwardian Butterfly House, woodland walks and, in summer, its famous promenade theatre performances. In keeping with its rich history, Lancaster boasts a number of museums including the City Museum, housed in a fine Georgian building and the Maritime Museum. Take a trip back in time at the Judges’ Lodgings, where furniture from Lancaster’s famous Gillow factory, which provided the furniture for the Titanic, is on display. In the summer months the Lodgings also serves afternoon tea, allowing you to relax and enjoy a beautiful historic building right in the centre of the City. Yet in minutes it is possible to walk on the rural towpaths of Lancaster Canal, or stroll along the banks of the River Lune at St Georges Quay. Close by is the sea at Glasson Dock and inland is the gorgeous Lune Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty blessed with many fine gastro pubs.

The centre of Lancaster is a great mix of well known high street stores and independent boutiques, galleries, street cafes, coffee shops and restaurants. Lancaster offers lots of choice for an evening out with theatre, dance, live music, art and film events throughout the year.

Lancaster is also well known for its excellent University, Schools which include The Royal Boys Grammar School (one of the top Grammar schools in the UK), Lancaster Girls grammar schools, Ripley St Thomas CE Academy and many others.

Lancaster is a beautiful, quirky City which is safe and welcoming. It is a great place in which to live and work.
